IHHOF 60TH ANNIVERSARY
To mark the sixtieth anniversary of the International Hockey Hall
of Fame we will be publishing a pictorial book on the history
of hockey in Kingston. The first origins of the game are in Kingston
and date back to 1843, the game is now in its third century here.
It will be the first book published on the history of the game
in Kingston and among the many highlights are four Kingston players
who have scored Stanley Cup winning goals: Bill Cook, Ken Linseman,
Doug Gilmour and Kirk Muller.
CHERRY
FACES OFF NEW KINGSTON BOOK
"Make no mistake. Kingston is the cradle of hockey and
I am proud to be a Kingstonian."
With these
words, Hockey Night in Canada's Don Cherry introduces an illustrated
history of the game in his hometown and its contribution to Canada
and the World.

HOCKEY'S HUB, Three Centuries of Hockey
in Kingston is published to mark the 60th Anniversary
of the International Hockey Hall of Fame in Kingston, the world's
original hockey shrine.
Distributed
by Quarry Heritage Books of Kingston, the 240-pages trace the
Limestone City's rich hockey heritage from "The Father of
Hockey" Capt. James T. Sutherland to the Cook Brothers and
recent retirees Doug Gilmour and Kirk Muller.
This handsome
hardcover, with 16 colour pages and 150 photographs, graphically
depicts the pivotal role of the city as a hub between Montreal,
Ottawa, Toronto and the United States. It salutes the great teams
from the pioneer sevens of Queen's University and Royal Military
College, to the numerous Kingstonians who have participated at
every level of the game from players and referees to coaches,
managers and executives.
The Kingston
story is told chronologically with six special chapters ranging
from the city's unique Historic Hockey Series on the harbour ice
(depicting the 1886 game) to the RMC-West Point rivalry and the
Birthplace of Hockey debate that started in Kingston exactly 100
years ago.
The stories
and pictures were compiled by hockey historian and journalist
Bill Fitsell and former CKWS-TV sports director Mark Potter, the
current president of the International Hockey Hall of Fame. Proceeds
from the sale will go towards a new downtown site for the hockey
shrine.
Publication
was made possible by grants from the City of Kingston's Healthy
Community Fund and the Davies Charitable Foundation. Kingston
Historical Society supported the Hall's application for a grant
from Ontario's Trillium Foundation.
The book,
an ideal gift for the sports buff, is scheduled to be launched
Thursday, December 11, 2003, 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Hall, Kingston
City Hall.
